Where and how to book
The Belgian theory exam is taken at an approved GOCA centre - never online, never at a driving school. Booking is done online through the GOCA network, where you choose the centre, the date and the language of the exam.
Payment is taken at booking or on site depending on the centre, and you will need valid photo identification on the day. Turning up without it means being refused entry with the fee still due, which is the most banal and most avoidable way to lose a slot.

- Expect around thirty minutes; the result is given on site.
Choosing a centre on the right criterion
The nearest centre is rarely the best one. The criterion that saves the most time is the waiting time: in busy periods - end of the school year, September - two centres twenty minutes apart can differ by several weeks on the first free slot. Widening your search by thirty kilometres sometimes gains a month.
The second criterion is language. French, Dutch and German are offered across the network; English is available at some centres but not all. If you are not sitting the exam in a national language, that criterion comes before distance.
Book when you are ready, not before. The reliable signal is three consecutive mock exams above 45/50 on different question sets - an attempt booked too early costs the fee twice.
What happens on the day
You sit fifty questions, each read aloud and displayed, with roughly fifteen seconds to answer. There is no going back to a previous question, and no answer counts as a wrong answer.
Marking is asymmetric: a minor mistake costs one point, a serious mistake five, and you need 41 out of 50. The result is given on site at the end of the session.
If you fail
There is no legal waiting period: you can rebook as soon as a slot is available. The real constraint is the centre's queue, which is also the reason not to assume you can simply retake it next week.
Each attempt is paid again. After two failures, twelve hours of theory lessons at an approved driving school become compulsory before a third attempt - a cost with no relation to the exam fee, and the strongest argument for reaching the score threshold before booking rather than after.
