What the exam actually looks like
The Belgian theory exam for category B has 50 questions. Each one is read aloud and shown on screen, and you have roughly fifteen seconds to answer. The whole sitting takes about thirty minutes.
Marking is not one point per question. A minor mistake costs one point; a serious mistake - questions that bear directly on safety - costs five. You start from 50 and need 41 or more to pass. Two serious mistakes alone already put you at 40.

Can you take the theory exam in English in Belgium?
Yes. The exam is offered in French, Dutch and German, and a number of GOCA centres also run it in English. Availability is not uniform across the country, so check the language when you book your slot on goca.be rather than assuming it on the day.
If English is not offered at your nearest centre, two options exist: book at another centre that does, or sit the exam with an interpreter, which is allowed under conditions and at an extra cost. Either way, the questions and the marking scheme are identical - only the language of the wording changes.

What foreigners get wrong most often
Drivers who already hold a licence elsewhere tend to fail on the specifically Belgian rules rather than on general driving knowledge. Four of them account for most of it.
- Priority to the right. Belgium applies it far more widely than most countries. Unless a sign says otherwise, the vehicle on your right goes first - including cars that look like they are joining a bigger road.
- Speed limits differ by region. Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels do not all use the same default limit outside built-up areas.
- Stopping is not parking. Belgian law separates the two, with different rules; the exam wording plays on that difference.
- Bus lanes, cycle lanes and priority for trams follow rules that have no equivalent in many licence systems.
Who needs to pass it
Anyone applying for a first Belgian driving licence must pass the theory exam before they can get a provisional licence and start driving. You can sit it from the age of 17 for category B.
If you already hold a licence issued in another EU or EEA country, you can normally exchange it without any exam. Licences from outside the EU may be exchangeable depending on the issuing country, or may require both the theory and the practical test. The rules are set nationally and change, so confirm your case with your commune before you start revising.

How to pass the Belgian theory test
- Learn the road signs first Signs account for roughly a third of the questions and require recognition rather than reasoning. They are the fastest points to secure.
- Master priority rules Priority to the right and its exceptions cause more failures than any other chapter. Practise them on their own until the answer is automatic.
- Move to timed mock exams Fifty questions in one sitting, fifteen seconds each, no going back. This is what the real exam feels like.
- Book when you pass three in a row Three consecutive mock exams above 45/50, on different question sets. One good score can be luck; three cannot.
