What "the free route" means
Belgium lets you learn to drive with an ordinary person rather than a professional instructor. That person - a relative, a partner, a friend who meets the legal conditions - is a designated guide, named on your provisional licence, and you drive with them instead of paying for lessons.
It is called filière libre in French and vrije begeleiding in Dutch. It is not a loophole or a cheaper second-class path: it is one of the two official routes to the same licence, and a large share of Belgian drivers took it.
What it changes, and what it does not
It changes the cost and the calendar. It does not change the exams, the Highway Code, or the standard you are held to on test day.

The conditions your guide must meet
A guide is not simply whoever happens to be in the passenger seat. The law sets conditions - a minimum period holding their own category B licence, and the absence of certain disqualifications - and the guide is named on the provisional licence itself.
The exact requirements are set by regulation and administered by your commune, and they have been adjusted more than once. Confirm them at the commune before you plan around a particular person, rather than discovering at the counter that the person you had in mind does not qualify.
The condition nobody writes down
The legal conditions are the easy part. The one that actually decides whether the free route works for you is availability - and it is the one people overestimate.
A guide who can free up an hour twice a month stretches the process across many months, and a provisional licence that expires before you are ready to take the practical test is the most expensive form of delay there is. Before choosing this route, ask the concrete question: how many hours per week, realistically, for the next several months?
